Planning Success – Urban Placemaking in Little Patrick Street and Little York Street, Belfast
McAdam and our specialist consultancy team have secured planning approval for Belfast City Council's £1.2M transformative public realm scheme in the city centre. The scheme, adopting the principles within hashtag ABolderVision focuses on Little Patrick Street and Little York Street.
This placemaking-led approach aligns with the principles outlined in Belfast’s Local Development Plan (LDP) Plan Strategy, addressing design, environmental, transportation, built & natural heritage, and community infrastructure policies.
Working closely with our stakeholders including Department for Infrastructure, the scheme will significantly enhance active travel opportunities, reduce inconsiderate parking, and minimise through traffic, contributing to a cleaner, greener, and more inclusive city centre. By prioritising sustainable design, the scheme will create a vibrant public space tailored to the needs of the growing population in this dynamic part of Belfast.
🔸Reconfiguration of Little Patrick Street into a single-lane carriageway, with traffic calming measures, reducing car dominance & inconsiderate parking, promoting active travel, and ensuring safer servicing and emergency access.
🔸Traffic calming on Little York Street.
🔸The installation of planters with integrated seating, tree planting, and rain gardens, adding green, welcoming spaces, introducing biodiversity and providing nature-based solutions for surface water management.
🔸Surface improvements to enhance the public realm and urban environment.
