McAdam Design and Northern Ireland Water host QUB in Welcome Week

As part of Queenís University Belfastís Welcome Week, McAdam Design and Northern Ireland Water played host to over 50 first year Civil & Structural Engineering students for a site visit to the Upper Newtownards Road flood alleviation scheme.

NI Water Capital Project Manager, Richard Nevin, provided an overview of NI Water and the objectives of the scheme, highlighting the flooding issues which had occurred over several years in various residential areas around the Upper Newtownards Road and Knock dual carriageway areas. Robert McDonald, McAdam Designs Project Manager for the scheme explained how the issues raised by NI Water were investigated and modelled to help develop options for resolving the flooding with the preferred option developed further and eventually procured and delivered through two Phases of work using NI Water Framework Contractors A.G. Wilson and Dawson WAM. Robert explained in detail the many constraints and consultations required to successfully deliver a large infrastructure project along some of the busiest roads in Belfast using a combination of trenchless technology and proactive management to minimise disruption to the general public, local businesses and the launch of the new Glider service, part of DRD NIís Belfast Rapid Transport (BRT) project. Following Robertís overview of the project the staff and students from QUB where taken on a walking tour of the site providing an appreciation of the challenges involved in laying sewers in a highly congested environment.

Reflecting on the visit, McAdam Designís Bill Gowdy said, ďItís important to highlighted the multi-faceted role of the engineer on a project such as this and the relevance of QUBís course content which will provide an excellent grounding for engineering graduates as they entered the workplace in the years to come. We welcomed the opportunity to present this project, along with our partner NI Water, to the next generation of civil engineers.Ē Bill also took the opportunity to encourage the students to join the Institution of Civil Engineers as student members to further support their engineering journey and gain a greater insight into what a career in civil engineering can entail.
