McAdams were delighted to be invited by the BHSCT to be as a select list participant in a design competition for the new Ambulatory Care Centre at the acute Mater Hospital in Belfast. Working in partnership with our UK specialist Healthcare Architects Gilling Dodd we designed an exciting new development on this restricted, interface site in West Belfast. Our proposal addressed a diverse set of clinical services and accommodation including: Outpatients & Ophthalmology Services / Endoscopy Unit / Diagnostic Imaging Unit / Day Surgery & Interventional Radiology and a centralised decontamination unit for the whole hospital.
In addition to these key facilities the building also offered an exciting commercial opportunity through a centralised Welcome Centre, which combined visitor entrance and seating space with areas for a potential café and retail / pharmacy unit. Whilst these areas fell outside the client budget, we demonstrated that these value additions could be separately financed through commercial opportunities. The building was organised to best facilitate the clinical flows & wayfinding, working within a ‘patient first’ approach.
