Project Summary

Achieving Excellence Together is at the heart of the philosophy of St Patrick’s Academy and this was embraced and reflected in the design of the new school. The completion of St Patrick’s Academy realises the final phase in the masterplan of the combined educational campus of St Patrick’s Academy and St Patrick’s College. The state-of-the-art facilities have set new standards in the education sector, addressing the needs of all pupils, staff and visitors, and creating attractive and inspiring teaching spaces.

The school is circa 17,500m2 and contains an enhanced schedule of accommodation tailored to the needs of 1,320 pupils. It is conceived around two impressive internal courtyards, one with a formal grass lawn and the other with an outdoor performance area and permanent seating. In addition to a full range of teaching facilities, it includes larger dining facilities, a dedicated Oratory and an enlarged sports hall. Wider corridors throughout helps aid circulation and improve pupil behaviour whilst generous glazing achieves high quality of natural light in all key areas

The energy design strategy incorporates mixed mode ventilation with heat recovery throughout the building, the use of renewable energies, high levels of insulation and air tightness, high efficiency gas boilers, low E glazing, low energy lighting systems and water recycling.

McAdams services also included Principal Designer / Universal Access Auditor / Fire Engineer

Benefits

Designed with the focus on added value from inception our successful strategies included:

  • A “school in the community” ethos largely focused on the sports facilities. The Sports Hall and Gym can be securely accessed outside school hours as can the changing rooms and generous pitch provision catering for GAA / Soccer / Hockey
  • The 250m2 Oratory provides a central religious space which supports the religious development of the pupils whilst also providing a quite contemplation area
  • Master planned to facilitate the 2 separate schools on the site with shared sports facilities) the resultant educational campus provides accommodation for over 2000 pupils. This was considered an exemplar model of how efficiencies in site acquisition and usage could be captured within the Department of Education estate
